Two key patterns to master
Grammar
입니다 / 입니까 — formal "to be"
Add 입니다 to say "am / is / are" in formal settings. Turn it into a question by using 입니까.
저는 학생입니다.I am a student.
마이클 씨입니까?Are you Michael?
이에요 / 예요 — polite casual "to be"
Use 이에요 after a consonant and 예요 after a vowel. This is the friendly everyday form.
저는 마이클이에요.I am Michael.
저는 의사예요.I am a doctor.
